Like It Or Not, I'm Rooting For Ohio State to Get Back to the National Championship Game

"I lived my life like a burning man
and I won't get enough until my legs are broken."

- Stephen Jenkins

Admittedly, I'm a little fired up -- having returned to the land of overnight frosts in an acid reflux induced state of excitement.  It happened as I sat on the plane, halfway through a good paperback and my second Heineken.  As I looked at the exit row release diagram, and a slightly hilarious outline of a figure stepping out onto a flaming wing -- with the obligatory bold red "X" signifying (the apparently not obvious) undesirability of said action -- I realized something paramount: I want Ohio State to make it to another national championship game, even if they don't deserve to.

So what?  You say.  You're a Buckeye fan.  Of course you community college, cookie cutter home corn-holes think your retro Range Rovers can play with the speed.  It's not that simple.  In fact, I've spent the last -- how long has it been since September 13th -- five weeks droning and dribbling on about why the Buckeyes don't have any damn business playing for the title.  Could you blame me?  After becoming national pariahs with consecutive NC flops, and getting out of a cold swimming pool in front of the hottest girl at the hotel (USC), the thing -- I swore -- I wanted most was the solemn opportunity to bow out of the limelight and regroup.

I was lying to myself, and I realized it when I locked eyes with the burning man.  It probably started sometime before the flight.  Likely the moment I pulled up the newly minted BCS standings on my laptop in the airport concourse and saw Ohio State had wondered up to No. 9.

"What in the world is this team doing up in the Top 10?"  They're freaking soft, I thought to myself.  It was only on the plane that I knew: they're watching the burning man.  "Who?"  You ask.  The burning man.

Osu-lsu07_medium You've got no one to blame but yourselves.

It's every team ahead of us I'm referring to.  Every cripplingly deserving, innovative, complex, efficient outfit in the mix.  It used to be Missouri.  Man, didn't they look sharp on August 30th beneath the golden overhead lights of the Richard Jones Dome?  Who would have guessed they barely had a fuse.

Florida, too.  So what if the Gators could have shown up a few weeks back wearing slippers and still out run Les Miles and his passive-aggressive post-game interview marathon?  They got beaten by Ole Miss.  Ole Miss.  Even the name sounds like a skinny Bourbon Street madam in fishnet stockings.

And don't get me started on USC.  Oh yeah, they ponied us into submission.  And seven days later got spooked and splintered by an Oregon State team that lost to Stanford.  (Both of whom, by the way, were tackled by Mountain West competition).

Yeah, I'm saying it.  I'm tired of the secondhand smoke.  Sure, Ohio State doesn't show up sometimes.  Neither does your team, Athens.  So go on, talk about your competition, the pedigree of your conference.  Struggle mightedly to take down Kentucky, or South Carolina.  Take it into overtime, big boys.

Just remember, when you lose (and you probably will), and that officious bleeding water buffalo struggles up onto South Beach to take its dying breath on January 8th: you've got no one to blame but yourselves.

Remember that as you're watching Ohio State get blown out in the national championship for the third year in a row from a sticky stool at the neighborhood sports bar.  As Texas, or Alabama, or (gasp) USC is running the tight ends up the middle against the Cover 2, I'll be there in the stands.

And you know what.  I'll be smiling.  Okay, not smiling -- but at least grinning a little.

Because you're not there.  You're at home.  Sitting on your ass eating Pizza Hut chicken wings.  Watching my team play for the crystal.

The burning man knows the truth: at season's end there are only two teams that matter: those in the Game.  Everyone else, your Rose, Sugar, and Orange Bowlers, are predestined to play for half-baked glory, new iPod Touches, and next year's pre-season rankings.

Faced with that reality, I'm drinking the Kool Aid.  From now on, I'm rooting for Ohio State to fall backwards into the national championship.

Anything else (I'm convinced) would be failure as a fan.

Don't get me wrong.  The Buckeyes still don't deserve Miami.  Not after pulverizing Michigan State at the line.  And not (presumably) after upsetting Penn State (yeah right) to capture the Big 10 crown.

But your team -- the one who gets you all hot and bothered when you look at their offensive statistics; the one who's ranked eighth or better in the first edition of the standings -- will deserve it even less if they can't win out.

Until they do, I'll be boasting my frequent filer miles.  And scooping up your hotel reservations when you cancel them.

Because, you see, I'm a Buckeye.  And that's just what we do.

I would love the big ten to have representation in the National Championship game...

as long as the team doesn’t embarrass the big ten. The last two years, I was rooting for the Buckeyes to succeed and bring down what I feel is an overrated SEC team. This wasn’t the case as I had to close my eyes in so much pain as Florida and LSU dismantled the Buckeyes. Ohio State getting blown out by USC didn’t help my perception of the team. I am praying to bob that PSU beats OSU as I do not believe OSU can win the big game at the national state especially with a true freshman quarterback. It would be another hit to the big ten conference and I can’t watch another painful loss on the national stage. Even if OSU beats PSU, I don’t think there’s a realistic chance that the big ten will have a team in the national championship game. That blowout loss to USC was too much of a hit on the perception of everyone in the country. It will be to difficult to overcome and get them in the top two.

Well if Penn State wants it so bad...

Let ‘em go to Columbus and beat a hard hitting OSU team in the rain…Although I’m not totally with Jon here (imagine the hits if a Big 10 team makes it to the National Championship!), PSU knew this game was the elephant in the room. Now (switching to Keith Jackson voice), IS Penn State a team of destiny? Do they HAVE what it takes to go all the way? Comin’ up: Penn State versus Ohio State.

Oooo I’m already excited!

Oh Ho, Here Comes The Penn State Fan...

This is precisely what’s wrong with this town (I live in Columbus) and it is precisely why I am not fond of Ohio State. They don’t care if there team doesn’t deserve a National Championship berth and they don’t care if their teams makes a laughing stock of the rest of the conference. As long as they can say they were there. And then, when they blow it, they call for Tressel’s head on a silver platter. I think the Big Ten has a lot more to offer than mediocrity, as they’ve been known for the past few seasons, and I think Penn State has a real chance of showing the nation what that is. It’s not just me being a biased fan, it’s me being a football fan and seeing the true talent the fills ever crevice of Penn State’s team this season. I’m tired of watching the Buckeyes choke on a big stage, and this season they’ve looked weak on the smaller stages too. With their less-than-stellar showing, I don’t think the pollster will agree and I doubt too many people will be voting them into the Big Game, even if they win this weekend (which they won’t ;)

Ya know I still love ya, though, Jon!! And my Penn State-Michigan pictures are posted on my Facebook. Feel free to browse them and if you want to post any, you have my ok!! Wish I was going to be in attendance this weekend for this collassal showdown- are you going?

I totally agree with you...

I’m hoping this game will be high scoring, and close throughout ending in a Penn State victory. I’m excited for the game and it’s only Monday.

Well said Meredith...

Though it’s not immediately evident, the post is designed to (somewhat regretfully) chronicle the essentialism that both stirs and shakes college football. (And perhaps — however subtly — the limitations of the BCS).

So, let me clear up a few things:

1. As a fan of college football in general, I’m not in favor of seeing a national championship pair anyone but the true and tested finest competitors the country has to offer. This year (barring some unimaginable developments) that likely means representatives from the SEC, Big 12, (and/or) Penn State.

Now, this foundation is in tension with another part of my enthusiasm for the sport: my love for a specific team: the ever-popular Buckeyes.

One of the more difficult aspects of being a zealot (which, I think is what makes an otherwise irrational allegiance just plain fun), is knowing how to deal with disappointment, and being something other than the best.

I had a chance to watch Saturday’s contest against MSU for a second time, and despite notable strides in line play, still see an incomplete offense, and a defense that’s shaky (in a bend but not break sort of way) against the pass.

2. Which leads me to my next point: I do not see the same kinds of fundamental limitations when I watch Penn State play: leading me to feel strongly that the Nittany Lions are the better team at this point, and should win Saturday, and the rest of their schedule. Still, that doesn’t make me want to pull for the Buckeyes any less, nor, does it mean I’m not pleased when I see Saturday’s weather forecast calls for pouring rain. Perfect for slowing down the HD.

3. But, as you’ve suggested — that’s the problem with Columbus . We want to win even when we don’t deserve to.

While I won’t defend the sophomoric obnoxious, anti-social attitudes of fair weather fans (of which we have plenty), I believe that a desire to win in the now is a value ubiquitious to sport held by every fan, every game.

You can’t blame Florida in 2006 for stepping on Michigan in the campaign to get to Glendale. Still, you might have found yourself at the time criticizing Urban Meyer and the Gators, asserting that they didn’t deserve to be there.

For the same reason you can’t blame fans in Columbus for refusing to let go.

3. I’m a little surprised to hear the “rest” of the Big 10 growling about Ohio State embarassing them on the national stage. You’re right, the scarlet did embarass you: when we played in conference and won in both 2006 and 2007. (Illinois gets a small break from this one). If Penn State is really so “upset” about a soft Ohio State usurping the legitimacy of the Big 10 they should have done something about it when they had the chance: on the field.

Then again. That’s what Saturday is all about.

Love ya Jon

You are one of the few Ohio State fans who is clearly in the minority and actually rationalizes these sorts of things out. And touche… The Nittany Lions have laid down and allowed OSU to embarass them emensely the past few years. My fingers are cross that this weekend will not only end that, but will also break the curse of them being unable to win in Columbus. It’s sure to be a good one!

This is what I love about college football… The constant debate of who’s team is superior.

I wish the college football season was longer...

Many will agree with me when I say that home field advantage in college sports is really important. The problem with the short schedule is that teams play each other once and some teams aren’t played at all to determine who’s the best in the conference. In the NFL, you have divisions of 4 or 5 teams that play each other twice, once at home and away. I know you can’t compare college to the NFL due to the amount of teams in a college conference and it being impossible to play each team twice. But wouldn’t it be better to do something that the SEC does, where they split the conference and have a final game to determine the conference champion. It seems to me that it would be fairer. Let’s say that Penn State loses to Ohio State in Columbus by like 3 points. Does that necessarily mean Ohio State is the better team, would it necessarily have meant that if Ohio State played the game at Penn State that they would beat them there? If there were a big ten championship game, and Ohio State beat Penn State again, I would be more sure that Ohio State was the better team. There’s no way of knowing for sure, so why not take a look into separating a conference, it would sure as hell give me a more confident idea of who I thought the best team in the conference is at the end of the year. And plus, it wouldn’t make the big ten winner have to be idle for so long before competing in a bowl game.

The Big Ten (11) would need to add one more team to split the conference into 2 halves, and sadly the team that has been historically asked to join the B10 is Notre Dame (and as much as I hate ND, you have to admit that aside from their slide in recent years, that strength-wise and geographically they fit nicely). However ND has been happily independent for quite some time, and has shown no signs of veering from that course (in football). When you look at the other conferences with championship games, they have 12 teams, so making a 5/6 split simply won’t work.

So if ND isn’t the mythical 12th member, then who would be a decent fit; with particular emphasis on strength and geographic location? Until RichRod left, it may have actually been West (fuckin’) Virginia, but with Stewart at the helm they seem to be on a slide back towards mediocrity (or worse). Iowa State is one of the doormats of the Big 12, and in addition to their suck-i-tude it’s rather unlikely that they’d leave the Big 12. None of the MAC teams field a team consistently good enough to stack up to even the bottom half of the Big 10. I guess if the Wan-stache can continue to rebuild Pitt, that they may be the next best choice for an addition.

As a side note, how would you divide the conference: North and South regions or East and West regions? Regardless of the division, it’s quite likely that OSU and PSU would be in the same region. And if the split was E/W, then the Eastern region would likely include PSU, OSU, and Michigan regardless of who the 12th team was…which would make the Eastern region a bit like the B12 South, while the B10 Western region like the B12 North. Just some food for thought…
