2008 FBS Fantasy Playoff - Who is Your National Champion?
We at The Rivalry, Esq. are populist, proponents of the people, dedicated to giving the fans exactly what they want. As Gerry Spence aptly remarked, "I would rather have a mind opened by wonder than one closed by belief."
This kind of attitude is dangerous to the college football establishment; a greedy consortium of 7-fold Windsor knots, media giants, and grumpy old rich dudes -- who apply talcum powder like we apply common sense.

Mack is back, and he wants your vote.
It's my blog and I'll lie if I want to. We don't need major cities, historic venues, television contracts, and corporate sponsors to have a playoff. Heck, we don't even need pads, uprights, or a football.
We just need our minds. That's what the 2008 FBS Fantasy Playoff is all about. Humor me, for a moment and imagine the following scenario. Spurned on by Senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Congress passed the Football Bowl Subdivision Relief Act of 2008, declaring the Bowl Championship Series agreement an "illegal restraint of trade" in violation of 15 U.S.C. §§ 1-7 (2000). Citing the competitive disparities between Non-BCS and BCS programs, the system's failure to consider less-restrictive means, the anticompetitive reality that Non-BCS programs cannot play for or win a national championship, and the widespread impact on vertical and horizontal markets, the FBS Relief Act demands the NCAA immediately take action, and instates a cause of action for its failure to do so.
Like any good risk-adverse organization, the NCAA contacted The Rivalry, Esq., noting our general legal fortitude, and college football antitrust expertise. (They also filed suit in Federal District Court, challenging the constitutionality of the FBS Relief Act.) They asked us to find a way to bring the 2008-09 bowl season in compliance with the law.
After much deliberation we recommended, and the NCAA accepted, a modification of the BCS Bowl Infrastructure to accommodate an 8-team playoff. Using the Final BCS Rankings, released December 7th, the details are as follows:
2008 FBS Fantasy Playoff

The top-eight teams in the country have been selected to participate in a three-round playoff on location at each of the Bowl Championship Series sites. The teams have been seeded by virtue of rank.
Round 1 Matchups are as follows:
EAST
1. No. 1 OKLAHOMA vs. No. 8 PENN STATE, FEDEX ORANGE BOWL (12/19) 4:30 p.m. EST

2. No. 4 ALABAMA vs. No. 5 USC, ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL (12/19) 8:00 p.m. EST
WEST
3. No. 3 TEXAS vs. No. 6 UTAH, TOSTITOS FIESTA BOWL (12/20) 8:00 p.m. EST

4. No. 2 FLORIDA vs. No. 7 TEXAS TECH, ROSE BOWL PRESENTED BY CITI (12/20) 4:30 p.m. EST
Over the next several weeks we'll feature these preliminary matchups one-by-one for your vote on the outcome. The winner of Oklahoma v. Penn State will play the winner of Alabama v. USC for the East Division at the higher seeded team's First Round Site on Friday, January 2nd.
The winner of Texas v. Utah and the winner of Florida v. Texas Tech will play for the West Division at the higher seeded team's First Round Site on Thursday, January 1st. (Thus maintaining the New Years Day allegiance of the the Granddaddy of Them All).
So, let's do this. You'll have 48 hours to vote on the winner of Oklahoma v. Penn State. At the conclusion of that period, the polling will close, and we'll declare a winner -- as well as initiate the voting for the next match.
Feel free to use the comment space appurtenant to each post to discuss the matchup, explain your vote, and/or discuss the relative merits/limitations of the playoff format.
At the end of the contest we'll declare our FBS Fantasy Playoff Champion and see how the reader's selection coincides with the BCS National Championship Game.
Viva la revolucion!

As long a the Sooners are unaware of this....
PSU will win!!!
That’s a tough match up for PSU. I fear the OU offense might be too potent for us to handle, but I’ve seen them lay eggs in the BCS bowl games before. I’d definitely give the edge to the Sooners, but the homer in me voted for PSU.

here I am, WE WIN!
We just needed a couple players, a couple people to buy in to the fact and we were able to do it. --A.Q. Shipley

This actually might be a winnable game for penn state...
But maybe I am just being optimistic.
No one has stopped Bradford all year, even Texas gave up 35 points in the Red River Shootout.
I say 40-21, Oklahoma

Did people, like me, just vote for Penn State simply because it’s more fun this way?

Well, I think it actually has a little more to do with the fact that Black Shoe Diaries gets 10k hits per day…

You see y’all? ‘Member when the final Coaches Poll was anonymous, or. . . anonymous-like? Yup, thing’s were a little squirly not just too long ago. And so, some BCS homegrowns and . . -ahem, scratch that. And so it came to pass that in order to accepted, any coach voting in the end of year coaches poll, must make public their ballots while USA Today conducts the organization and publication the final results. Transparency. It’s our friend. . . . .It is?
I got here too late to vote, but Wowzers! There’s a mad grip of love for Penn State in this matchup. And here I thought Oklahoma looked like one of the better teams for 2008. I really did. Watched the game they had with Texas, and mother f_c_er! It seemed ALL THOSE ATHLETES on that field were serious ‘ballers" with “WTF?” written on a few of them! I normally flail at handling one of the many “projects” I got to do on my “Rob Lowe Pad” and more often than not, I’m scarfing down sh_t from the local Whole Foods buffet bar to appease the hunger from surfing and bailing the entire morning. So college football, other than the Trojans that are USC or the Crimson Tide of Alabama, that DOESN’T SHOW how poorly the Fighting Rash of Notre Dame is doing at the moment gets IT’S CHANNEL CHANGED! C’mon, at 9 AM on a Saturday morning? High tide hits around 7 or 8 where I’m here in Santa Monica- so. . .like I said- I’d be surfing, bailing, scrounging for car change, eating, or trying to do chores at that time? But the OK / TX game was BANANAS! Locked! Immediately. So, the short of the long of it: I really do think Oklahoma has a legit claim, right now, to be one of- if not The, best in the country right now.
I’m. . . .you guessed it! Hungry all of the sudden. Well, I guess- again. Here’s the what- I’d pick OK over Penn St. (not that I don’t think Penn St. isn’t a respectable opponent. they’ve got strengths where we USC have strengths, and certain skills and abilities that are entirely equal in performance with the very best of the highly ranked teams of this moment), but I just constantly read about and/or heard about how well Sam Bradford and cohorts were performing, and the incredible ground and aerial display the Sooner offense possessed. I was kinda bewitched, as it were.
OK: 49 – Penn St: 30 . Penn State D stays on the field too long. OK running game smokes the edges and gets numerous long gains. Bradford is able to attack post routes and outs, his receivers start catching at full speed and get ATC yardage and scoring touchdowns. Paterno coaches on the sidelines and never stops devising plans and rotating players. Stoops gets a monkey off his back.

F_ckin' -A .
And -B!
It’s been a rather scattered Friday for me, thus far. Before I joined “The Rivalry, Esq.” and started headstrong into commenting in this post, I honestly DIDN’T know what “fan friendly” site this was. Seriously, didn’t look to find out- and didn’t think much a deal out it, to be quite honest with you. Well. . . . . there’s that and . . .maybe a few too many caf-fiend-ish hot tasty beverages from Hades! (pumpkin latte’s, fellas! i know. sounds gay i realize THAT, but still . . . they’re sublime. this is true) Add to that it’s Friday and just the other day I decided to go skiing this weekend.
I’m kinda not right in the noggin today. Tonight? I’ll be tranquilo. I’ll have it all sorted and I’ll definitely remember . . . .that THIS is a Big 10 site . . . and . . . and oh, by the way- I noticed the “Esq.” , is that the abbreviated form of, or for, Esquire? If so, are all members free to refer to themselves as Esquires, as well? Or is that a “consolidated union” type of set-up between the managers and authors of this blog? In all honesty, I think having that: (comma), Esq.(period) sh_t after your name? . . .it sounds pretty “f”-ing boss! (it’s quite vexing finding something in that in-between state where, – it’s, “cool as sh_t” and “not realizing how truly ghetto it actually is” these days. i confess, and i admit that i am SO far removed from truly being hip- that even my imaginary alter egos are bored with my social lethargy) So, I formally ask, “May I use (comma)Esq.” after my moniker when and if I would elect to choose to?
