The Rivalry Travels: Tostitos Fiesta Bowl (Phoenix, AZ) - I Don't Know Who Is The Best Team In the Country, But It Ain't Texas
Hats off to the stoic Ohio State defense and quick-strike Texas offense that delivered a Tostitos Fiesta Bowl worthy of the ages.
But let's get something painfully, predominately straight: The Longhorns aren't the best team in the country, they're not even close.
Sure, Texas is guilty-by-association, catching the scarlet and gray on the up-swing; but let's face it: they struggled -- badly; the great no-huddle offense and Heisman Laureate quarterback stumbling to put together successful drives, riding penalties, and miss-sets to victory.
Meanwhile, Ohio State, with it's garden 2-stroke little engine that could, put up almost as many points -- coming back and pushing the burnt orange to their absolute edge.
I'll have a lot more to say when this beer buzz wears off, and I sleep for twelve hours, but for now let's agree:
1. No one in their damn minds is voting the Texas Longhorns No. 1 in the Associated Press Poll.
Why? Because other teams deserve it more: namely Utah, USC, and the winner of Thursday night's suddenly less interesting barnburner.
2. Oklahoma is in big trouble.
The Big 12 has been exposed for what it is: an experiment in nuclear fission. When they play real man coverage, they melt.
3. Our quarterback caught a touchdown pass.
Time for the pillowcase.

Not so sure you want to go down the “they didn’t blow ‘em out, so they’re out!” path…

Sure, let's do it.
I’ll happily go down that road, since my team actually went undefeated.
Plus, it was the first game of the season, against a team at the time no one thought would be as bad as they were and in their home field. Their fans were jacked for the new era, their players were jacked and Utah dominated for pretty much 3 quarters. It wasn’t until the 4th, when the Utes began to wilt a bit.
But for the first game of the season? I’ll take it.
Especially since Utah went on to win 12 more in a row.

Why does USC deserve it more?
Because they beat OSU at home by more? Or is it because they beat PSU who also beat OSU? Or is it because they were so amazing in only having one loss in the Pac 10 this year? I just don’t see it.
You can definitely make a case for Utah. Although I would be more willing to give them credit if they hadn’t backed out of their home-away-home series with Texas that was scheduled to start this year. If they had beaten Texas, they would be in the National Championship. Although I think Texas would have won at home and would be in the NC game instead – but either way, it would have put the winner in the NC game.

Because having one loss
out of the Big 12 South doesn’t look as impressive after watching what happened to Okie State, T Tech, and Missouri in their bowl games.
Having one loss out of the Pac Ten seems better than it did four weeks ago after watching what Oregon, OSU, Cal, and Arizona did.
And that doesn’t get to the eye-ball test. USC looked much better than Penn State and Ohio State. Texas looked even with Ohio State and Texas Tech.

"And that doesn’t get to the eye-ball test. USC looked much better than Penn State and Ohio State. Texas looked even with Ohio State and Texas Tech."
What? Everyone knows that the transitive property does not apply to football. Penn State crushed Oregon State, yet Oregon State beat USC? And USC crushed OSU, who lost to Penn State by just a little? And Texas crushed Arkansas, who beat LSU, who got to overtime against Alabama, who played a close game against Florida? Texas would clearly beat Florida.

That's not analysis
That’s an opinion. Texas has defeated seven bowl teams, including four Top 20 teams.
There may be reasons to rank others #1, but “they have no case now” because they didn’t blow out Ohio State is just garbage.

I think your missing the point
Texas had a chance, in the 2nd most important game of the year, to prove that they are the #1 team in the nation…and many people don’t think they made their point successfully…Bowl games are a bellwether, though obviously not the ultimate judge, of a teams strength. USC rolled, Utah rolled, Texas was almost beaten by a team thats been universally mocked for its middle school offense. In the season ending analysis, Texas missed a huge chance to place some doubt in voters minds. Thats it.

Fine,
they played a joke of a non-conference schedule and their conference wins now look a lot less impressive in light of those team’s bowl performances.

Getting there
That’s an actual argument, but whose resume is so clearly superior that Texas “has no case now. Seriously.”?
Again, I’m fine with arguing for some other team, but the idea that Texas lost out on its argument last night because it didn’t paste the Buckeyes is silly. They have accomplished more than enough to have a case. They’re in the discussion — or should be.
That’s all I really want to emphasize. I won’t be voting Texas #1, in all likelihood, but I won’t be dismissing their case out of hand, either. That I find objectionable.

well, its been 12 hours LB, what say ye now?
With those beer goggles off does your gal seem as ‘hot’ as she did last night? Like PB, and the rest of the sober Burnt Orange Nation members, I tip my Fiesta Bowl Champs 2009 hat in your direction for a game well played, but take exception to many of the commnets made by obviously bitter Buckeye Fans.
Your team played well but not great last night, and here are my supporting facts:
1) If your QB could have connected on just a handful more of those easy passes he missed you’d have pushed the pace of this game alot more.
2) Your defense at times looked confused and slow, the exception being your DB’s they were as good as touted without a doubt.
3) Let’s be honest, Beanie ran his mouth in the first half when he was having his way with our d-line, and in the second half we shut it for him, period.
4) Texas played probably the second worst half of football its played all year and was still only down 6 to 3 at half, and could have easily had another 3 to 7 pts were it not for that ill advised INT by Colt near halftime.
Pumping up USC because you Pac 10/Big 10 snobs think nothing else exists between Lansing and Hollywood is just a bit tired don’t you think? Texas will get some votes for first because the accomplished a heck of alot more this year than most of the other teams being mentioned AND none of our shortcomings included a loss at home to an unranked team (signed USC and Florida).
I will say this in your favor, your QB is a very talented and gifted young man. If his passing progresses he will do great things for your school. The Vince Young comparisons need to stop until he accomplishes something akin to what VY did, but kudos to your coach for loosening up the tie enough under the sweater vest to run that two QB set very nicely…now the obvious question, why did you save that formation for the end of the year?

I agree that OSU played well but not great, but I disagree with some of your supporting facts (those that I don’t disagree with I’ll make excuses…err explanations as to why I think this is the case):
1) Agreed. But he’s a true freshman, and unfortunately he’s going to make mistakes.
2) Realistically the confused and slow “look” occurred during Texas’ no-huddle spurts. When the game was played at a lower tempo, the rest of the D looked fine. To me this speaks more to OSU’s short-comings in defending an up-tempo game plan (which has given them fits all year when teams actually employed it) as opposed to being slow and lost. Still a problem, but I don’t think it’s the problem you’ve outlined.
3) Let’s be honest, Beanie had a concussion and was kept out of much of the 2nd half (there are some reports saying that he couldn’t see properly after sustaining said concussion). The 3rd quarter was god awful for the OSU offense (and to a lesser extent the D, but some of that is also put back on the O who promptly went 3 and out after the D finally managed to get Texas off the field without scoring). And while we’re being honest, OSU’s 2nd string running back didn’t seem to have a lot of difficulty moving the ball (6.0 ypc) late in the game. So I’m guessing that the point of your statement is Texas was able to stop the rushing attack in the 2nd half, which is not true. In the 3rd quarter? Yes. Hell, OSU couldn’t do ANYTHING in the 3rd quarter. But Boom Herron and Pryor were able to move the ball effectively in the 4th quarter on the ground.
4) While Texas did look bad in the 1st half, couldn’t at least part of this be due to OSU’s performance? It’s also quite possible that it could have been 10 – 3 at the half if not for a false start by Browning on the Texas 5 yard line. Hell, while we’re speaking in hypotheticals, why not 13 – 3 (i.e. no false start and a sound hold on the shanked 51-yard FG)? Or better yet 21 – 3, assuming OSU is able to finish drives like they were in the 4th quarter? Obviously this is all incredibly subjective, but you at least have to consider that OSU deserves some credit for said terrible showing.
In the end it was a hard fought game that was damn close and went down to the wire. While not exactly what either team was hoping for (an OSU victory or a convincing curb-checking for UT), it was still an entertaining game. As for the mythical “best team in the country” discussion, I’ll stay out of that because it’s just politicking, hypothetical scenarios, and invalid transitive properties (e.g. if A beats B, and B beats C, then clearly A could beat C; this is fine in mathematics but not in competitive sports). Though the real reason is I’m lazy and apathetic with respect to that discussion, but the former sounds better.
…now the obvious question, why did you save that formation for the end of the year?
I wish I knew. Perhaps it’s because they had a little more confidence that the O-line wouldn’t do their patented ole’ blocking scheme, thus allowing statue Boeckman time to throw? Or maybe this was a formation cooked up for Michigan that was unnecessary (as Tress usually throws a new wrinkle or two specifically for the team up north)?

Because you asked.
The girl’s still cute.
The Buckeye defense didn’t just look confused, they were confused. No one we’ve seen runs the no-huddle, quick-strike like UT. That withstanding, I do believe our defense outplayed Texas’ offense; jamming the line, drowning the rush, and truncating the pass. Sure, they got it going when it mattered, but if Ohio State had mustered even a modest bit of offensive prowess, the Longhorns would have been dead and buried before the half.

“Pumping up USC because you Pac 10/Big 10 snobs think nothing else exists between Lansing and Hollywood is just a bit tired don’t you think?”
I would make the argument between State College and Seattle, East Lansing and Hollywood are not far enough east or west to encompass all the Big Ten and Pac 10 schools.
