MSU v TT in the Alamo Bowl: Musings on TRE's first press conference

The Spartans held their official press conference for the Alamo Bowl on Friday. I attended as the microphone holder for a Channel 12 reporter. For those who attend pressers consistently and interact with players/coaches, it's just another meeting. Since this was my first one, ever, it was intriguing on a personal and philosophical level.

Coach Dantonio took questions and also served up the truest quote of the day. "Coach, what are you going to do with your backups getting significant playing time?"...to which Dantonio said, "We have football players. They are going to play."

TRE ranks the Big Ten bowls in chances of winning.

Judging the impact of the MSU suspensions.

A quick look at Texas Tech's surprising bowl performances of late.

It's impossible not to say possibly incriminating, embarrassing, or stupid things at a press conference. That truth leads me to another statement - If you think the male-female relationship is weird (and it is), the sportswriter-athlete/coach relationship is on the same weird plane. The media holds tremendous power, but at the same time, many have the air of a proud father or a weak kneed N'Sync fan around the athletes.

Star-divide

We watched Jack Ebling interview Greg Jones, who showed humbleness amidst his impressive accolades (1st team All-American, etc). Jones gave more insight into the frat fight which led suspensions - "When I hang out (with the suspended players), we don't talk about it much. I know how they feel so why discuss it?"

Img_2353_medium

Apparently ESPN named Michigan State the least likely team to win a bowl game this season. I know this because it was brought up 333 times during the Q and A with the players. How's a player supposed to react? "You're right, sir, ESPN has a valid point and we'll be lucky to get out of there with a three touchdown defeat." Lot's of stupid questions were asked - but there were some great ones too. Kirk Cousins was challenged - "How are you going to react with inexperienced wide receivers? How will you lead?" Cousins said that he'll do what great quarterbacks do - make the wide receivers better and lead by example.

I learned something about Cousins too. He's intense, smart, and well spoken. Cousin's sincerity and warmth is rivaled only by Mr. Rogers. The first time I looked in his eyes, it was like the first time I heard the Beatles. (H/T to Superbad)

Anger seeped through some of the players statements. Blair White used the word "pissed" to describe his emotions toward the suspended players actions. White, who's went from walk-on to 1st team All-Big Ten and team leader, shared an emotion that was echoed throughout the presser: excitement at going to Texas.

Img_2355_medium

Larry Caper (above) shared that excitement and didn't seem phased at the thought of being a freshman who will get half the carries against TT, not to mention part of a team that's a 10 point underdog. "We can win if we execute," was his mantra.

It was surreal, asking questions and eating lunch with players I've written about all year. Weird thoughts ("I thought everyone would look bigger", "These pressers will pay off for the players via improved public speaking skills") seeped into my brain as I was surviving the somewhat monotonous Q and A. I'll leave with two thoughts: 1) Michigan State might get killed, but it won't be for lack of leadership. White, Jones, and Cousins bring that in spades. 2) In my mind, I don't kowtow to the players or idolize them especially. I'm far more interested in the schemes and the CFB culture. But it's the players that make this all go around.

let's hope TT is listening to ESPN

Psychologically, with such a long layoff and preparation time, I think it actuallly
helps MSU to be the underdog. It adds to the us vs the world feeling and hopefully
it takes away from TT’s preparation. No doubt this is a very hard match up for us, however, when the game is played, strange things can happen.

Our offensive line and dline, linebackers were not affected player-wise by the suspensions. Sounds like the leadership is in place from the players interviewed. We are not likely to win but we certainly can win with a good game plan and good execution. Will be very interested in both the tight ends and possibly Nichol as a receiver AND in how the defense executes. Special teams has been pretty solid lately; we have a great kicker and punter. It will depend on both offense and defense. If the offense has a lot of 3 and outs, the defense will wear down no matter how well they are executing. If the defense cannot stop TT from scoring, it is doubtful we can win in a shoot-out. JLS’s first team to 40 wins philosophy never served us well in the past.

Thank you for the insight, interesting perspective of the media day, players.

You make an important point – the “us v. the world” idea is going to be imprinted on the players through ESPN osmosis. And the people most likely to be influenced are the veterans who have experienced winning (9-4 last year) and Cousins, who has tremendous pride in this team. From last week’s article –

“Adversity usually has one of two effects on individuals: Either people step up and play more minutes than usual while making plays…or they wilt under the scrutiny and added responsibility.”

I listened to the DCO Narduzzi at the presser and he said 2 intriguing things. 1) He doesn’t see the defense making many adjustments for TT; this is definitely in line with his personality as a DCO…and 2) He compares TT to Northwestern (wide open spaces, etc). This is an important comparison (and mind you I’m being as optimistic as possible) because MSU played good bend but don’t break defense against NW.

Finally, Texas Tech ALWAYS looks like a bad matchup, but for the last three years, the Red Raiders have either been beaten or played barn burners. So…I’m sayin there is a chance.

I think you’re right that the MSU defense didn’t break against Northwestern, but NW also wasn’t nearly as aggressive down the field as Texas Tech tends to be and spent a lot of the game trying to play keep-away with long, possession-killing drives.

In addition, NW had two back-breaking fumbles in the second half which did more than anything Narduzzi schemed up to help MSU win.

That being said, I completely agree with your last point about TT’s disappointing bowl track record.

Also, I wanted to mention how much I enjoyed this piece.

You’re right, strange things can happen. Against Texas a&m this year, everyone was saying how bad Tech was going to beat them and Tech had just entered the rankings after beating Nebraska. Then a&m came into Lubbock and laid down a 52-30 whipping on our Red Raiders. It was a classic case of listening to everyone say how great you and expecting to win without actually playing the game.

Also, although Tech is very capable of putting 40 or 50 on the board, they have come out flat a couple times and stunk it up. They scored 41 on a great Oklahoma defense one week, but scored only 17 to OkieState (not great defense) the week before and only 20 to Baylor (another not great defense) the week after. Your guess is as good as anyone’s which team decides to show up to this game. Hopefully ya’ll can get over the suspension mess and play a great game!
