Some Choice Quotes From 2008 Big 10 Media Days

ASAP Sports is a website I discovered lately - basically it's a huge amount of transcribed press conferences with coaches and players from professional and college sports. This website opens up the possibility that you can go look for a transcribed version of Denny Green's "They are who we thought they were dammit" conference. More importantly, it doesn't allow a coach/player to ever forget regrettable or wrong statements. Here are some quotes from last year's Big 10 Media Day that now seem ironic, or funny, or just incorrect...

Ron Zook: ..."If you go back and look at Juice's freshman year, I believe his completion percentage was 39 percent, which was obviously not very good. And of course the big thing at this time a year ago is he throwing the ball better. This past year he was, I believe, right at 57 percent. And obviously that needs to get better; you want that up around 70 percent."

Jim Tressel: ...(on Todd Boeckman) "I think it's a lot easier for him to step up and take charge of a football team. I'm sure as he came into last year, part of him was saying, hey, I have to prove to these guys I can be a quarterback and now he has proven to them that he's been their quarterback, and I think it will be a little easier for him to take things and take charge and be in command and all those things that you would love from your quarterback..."

Joe Tiller: "It's almost --to me it's almost a reflection of our society in that things can be instant in the spread offense. And I often times refer to our society as being an instant gratification society so the spread offense just fits right in. We've just done our part to help America be better"

Rich Rodriguez: "And I'll tell you, as that guy coming from the outside in, the Big Ten conference has as much respect overall as a league as any conference in the country. I'm obviously excited to be here."

Joe Paterno: ...(asked what Tressel will do with Pryor) "I don't think that's my decision to make. In fact, I think that's a dumb question to be honest with you, even though you are a Penn State graduate. I think that's up to Jimmy. He has got to figure out how that fits in with what his people are. I have absolutely no idea."

I had no problems with him

But the level of fail this year, especially considering what their fans were hoping for, just made me laugh at the quote.

Media Day

The questions Paterno got were the freakin worst. No one gained anything from him being there.

yeah

what made it worse was that PSU was embarking on one of their most interesting years since Mike Robinson – New QB, new system, new strategy…and he gets asked 100 straight dumb questions about retiring. It’s like – ok media, you got the living legend in front of you, you can ask him about football culture, penn state’s new offense…and instead you pound him on whats it going to take to get him to retire, how hes going to retire…

not impressive – his answers was priceless though

Joe

He’s good for about a zinger a PC. Hopefully this years PC will be better since no one will be selling the Lions short.
