What's Better: Rushing the field or rushing the court?
As I watch Providence upset #1 Pitt, a defeat that followed Maryland's upset of #1 UNC, which followed...You get the point. The intensity of the fan onslaught, coupled with the overexcited undergrad ball players and the uncomfortable stuffed shirts sitting courtside, make the basketball court rush a sweaty, crowded experience. Plus you will probably end up mushed against Erin Andrews while she interviews the coach and BMOC.

But can it compare to the seat hopping, 75 yard sprint that accompanies rushing the football field? The wave of fifteen thousand undergraduates running to one point is a beautiful spectacle and the anarchic concept is dangerously exciting. So here is a bulletpointed comparison - I am of course partial to rushing the football field, but there are arguments for both. Any good stories are appreciated...
Rushing the Court
- Short run from the student section to mid court
- Quick access to celebrating closely with players
- Sweaty but safe: Jump around for 5 minutes, walk out of gym safely
- Better chance of getting your face on TV
- Might run into Erin Andrews
Rushing the Field
- Walk 25 rows down, sprint 70 yards through mass of players, coaches, guards
- Always the possibility of getting tackled by security guard or laid out by angry opposing player
- Play in the snow, soccer style celebrate in the muddy turf
- More chances for semi legal vandalism (take a piece of the field, goalpost, player's sweatbands)

I am totally against rushing the court unless your
team has just beaten a team as a 7-1 or greater underdog (roughly 17 points in football).
That said, I did rush the court against Duke twice, when the clock malfunctioned in 2006.
Court rushing is just becoming too cool and there will be a crackdown at some point because someone will get seriously injured.
If your team is favored, you never ever run the court.

OSU v UM 2008
At the freezing cold OSU – UM game I went to in ’08, a bunch of people rushed the field for a 30 point win over a huge underdog…But the game did clinch another shared Big 10 title for the Bucks and it is a rivalry game…So maybe it was inappropriate, but it happens…

Any win over Michigan needs to be celebrated like a championship.

OSU @ PSU '05
People that rushed the field, people that didn’t rush the field. Who cares? Everybody gets maced!
PSU currently has officers line the outside of the field after every home game (if they missed one, hopefully the students wouldn’t miss out on the chance to rush the field, even against Temple).
Also in ’05, when people were tagged on the field in Facebook pictures the police used those and gave out tickets/whatever.

As nice as it was to rush the court against Duke
If we ever rush the field again at Michigan it probably means we won the Big Ten title or some other ridiculously huge thing happened (like beating OSU).

Got to say rush the field
We did it for three straight game my junior year at Purdue when we had Drew Brees. Then again, our basketball team was so awful I never got the chance.
A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance
