Signing Day Open Thread: Big 10, Big Surprises, Results
As I look through the swath of destruction that Signing Day left on the Internet, I am sure I can find a couple interesting facts/stories; I will post them below and feel free to add any statistics or rantings about how this day is overblown and not that important.

Best Recruiting Coup's
David Gilbert, a 4 star DE from Florida, went to Wisconsin. Undersized, but extremely explosive, this is a confidence booster more than anything. Getting a big time recruit from Florida after such a horrendous year and amidst coaching rumors – priceless.

Justin Green to Illinois, over Ohio State and Kentucky. Listed as one of Rival’s “Top 5 Surprises,” Green might be the fastest player coming into the Big 10 – another step toward recruiting speed…ha

BSD on Penn State’s biggest recruiting coup…
“But the big news of the day was the late commitment from Delaware wide receiver Justin Brown. There were a lot of rumblings all morning that he was going to pull a last minute change of heart and go to Rutgers, but ultimately he went with the good guys. The 6’3” 210 lb Brown will make a fantastic addition to the Spread HD offense."
BSD is correct – a Derrick Williams-esque player fits perfectly in the Spread HD. Will Penn State ever have three NFL wide receivers with similar skills on the same team? Probably not – but getting Brown is a step in the right direction.

Northwestern pulled the #19 Pro Style quarterback in the nation, Evan Watkins. Northwestern has stayed above the mediocre middle thanks to its defensive intensity lately and it’s ball control passing offense, a rare combination – Will Fitz change things up with Kafka, the running QB responsible for the greatest rushing day of any Big 10 quarterback? Or Will he mold Kafka into another Basanez/Bacher clone?

Hayo Technology
Minnesota got a 4 star recruit named Hayo Carpenter, a JUCO 4.4 guy. When he starts, there’s only one song he’s coming out to…Also, a late commit named Michael Carter turned down West Virginia and Florida to come to help Coach Brewster build his reputation of being a highly skilled recruiter…Here is Daily Gopher’s take:
Pipelines are forming. Three more Texas recruits and four from Florida in this class. Brewster is making headway into the states where the talent pool is deepest. Not all will pan out but landing seven kids from TX/FL is usually better than landing seven kids from Iowa and Wisconsin. If Brewster can get a third of his class from Minnesota, a third from TX/FL/CA and a third sprinkled from around the country that should be a solid formula for building a team with deeper talent.

Iowa Hawkeyes
Iowa got a couple of 4 star recruits, including all purpose stud tailback Brandon Wegher.
Thoughts on this recruiting class, courtesy of BHGP: “It’s the best skill position class they’ve had in at least 4 years, and maybe in Ferentz’s entire tenure.”

First “Quote of the Day” from Black Shoe Diaries:
“So overall it was a good class. Was it a top five recruiting class? Who knows? What makes a top five recruiting class? A bunch of stars handed out people who devote their lives to chasing down 17 year old kids for interviews and pictures? Whatever.”

Another “Quote of the Day” from Eleven Warriors Open Thread:
“Its hilarious how when a kid in the ESPN top 150 commits to Ohio St. he drops a few spots, and when a kid commits to an SEC heavyweight, he moves up. ESPN is such an agenda driven joke.”
I wonder if that’s true…

ESPN is a joke in recruiting. I know someone who is a scout for high school talent. He has worked with ESPN in the past. They use their NFL reviews and cut and paste them for the high school talent players. They look at five minutes of tape and find a compatible review that they can use. It’s a joke.
Rivals and Scout do a much better job.

All 4 Star Dual QB's, Please Report to the Big 10...
Kevin Newsome (PSU), Tate Forcier (UM), Nathan Scheelhaase (Illinois)…
What does it all mean, mannnn? Zook gets another hyped quarterback, but can he install a system at Illinois that will sustain success? Is Forcier, a early enrolled QB, going to be ready to take the reigns of the RichRod offense (because we all know he fits the new mold of a Wolverine QB better than Threet)…
