"He/She has a great personality." Usually this is a vague answer for when a friend asks you about a date with an unattractive partner. But great personality separates college football from so many other sports. It's the huge undergrad population so physically intertwined with the players. It's the nostalgia and respect for the Saturday afternoon atmosphere that leads families to throw thousands of dollars at their alma mater. Flavor, personality, and any number of oddities are draped all over college football.

Discussion of the amazingly interesting culture of CFB brings me to the now infamous Maurice Clarett blog. Clarett has turned into quite the blogger thanks to his family's help; he dictates thoughts and philosophies to his relatives, who then post them on "The Mind of Maurice Clarett." The blog alternates between unintelligble ("I found my peace through learning to become more conscious and operating in the non-linear realm. Energy doesn't die. I will forever live on. Becoming comfortable with everything that is inevitable has allowed me to live free.") and extremely wise ("Next time you hear another person talking down on someone while the person isn't present, calmly, ask them, what the significant purpose behind their words is. Chances are they will not be able to say anything because they don't want to tell you the truth. The truth is they are jealous.") ESPN discussed the story on Sportscenter and Ohio sportswriters used the blog to take potshots at the former OSU star.

I don't give a damn whether Clarett is insane or learned; I see a bigger picture. His story, all the way from heroic frosh to convict, is a Big 10 story now. Maybe it's selfish and overly broad, but this polarizing former star will forever be connected to the conference, along with the Fab 5, Andy Katzenmoyer, and other controversial figures who inserted their personalities into the Midwestern psyche. My father always said the best thing a phenomenal athlete could do was go to college for even the shortest time. Not only will you always have a place to go back to, but you gain thousands of people who won't ever forget your contributions. So enjoy, or gawk, or shake your head at one of the Internets oddest blogs...but know that you will always be connected to Maurice Clarett. Which oddly, is a good thing.
