Top 10 SEC-Big Ten Games of the Last Decade: #6 - Iowa v LSU, 2005 Capital One Bowl
The Setup and the Players
#14 Iowa rolled into Orlando on a seven game win streak, which included defeats of Big 10 powers Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Purdue (they used to have a football team). All coach Kirk Ferentz needed for another 10 win season was to defeat the #12 Louisiana State Tigers and their massive amounts of SEC speed.

It's always fun to look at these old matchups, because you see the amount of talent on both sides of the ball. The Hawkeyes were led by quarterback Drew Tate and a defense stacked with future NFL players (Chad Greenway, Abdul Hodge, Sean Considine, Matt Roth, Jonathon Babineaux). LSU featured Indi star RB Joseph Addai and former #1 overall pick Jamarcus Russell...in backup roles. All-American DE Marcus Spears was the most hyped player for a defense that ranked third in the nation for ypg allowed, while Laron Laundry and Corey Webster (NYG) made the LSU backfield pretty damn intimidating.
Bama Hawkeye's Game Recap: Don't Drop The Baby
Things that people forget about that game:
It was a great game between two outstanding teams, regardless of how that last 9 seconds played out. Iowa dominated early and did all of the smart "little things" right. LSU brought JaMarcus Russell in at QB and started chipping away at the Hawkeye's early lead. The LSU go-ahead TD capped a great comeback by the Tigers.
Here are the countdown games so far...
#7 -- Georgia v Purdue, 2000 Outback Bowl
#8 -- Michigan State v Florida, 2000 Citrus Bowl
Kirk Ferentz and Drew Tate earned Fs in time management for the game ending possession. If you listen to Gary Dolphin calling the last 46 seconds, you can hear him saying "You gotta call a timeout" a dozen times. Iowa completed a pass short of a First Down with 30 seconds left and didn't call one of their two timeouts. Drew Tate spiked the ball with 16 seconds left, but the line wasn't set. 5 yard penalty (back to the Iowa 40) and the ref winds the clock. As Dolph yells, "They've started the clock AND DREW DOESN"T KNOW THAT!" Ferentz said that the miracle play really bailed him out for the clock management, and he was right. It should be noted, 2004 was the last year the TOs had to be called by a player (not a coach on the sideline).
Warren Holloway caught the ball at the 15 yard line. Despite the blown coverage, there were two LSU DBs with a shot at him. One was blocked by Ed Hinkel (one of those great unnoticed plays that wins games), the other missed the tackle at the 10 yard line. If the tackle is made, the clock runs out and LSU wins 25-24. Instead, Holloway gets his only career TD catch (and never has to buy a beer within the state lines again) on the last play of his career.
As for me, I watched the game in my living room with my wife (also an Iowa grad) and my 5 week old son. As I was jumping up and down screaming, all my wife could say was "DON'T DROP THE BABY!!!!!!" One of my five favorite moments as a sports fan.

We didn't know at the time that this was the capstone of the 2002-04 Hawkeye run. The ‘05 season started with talk of a national championship, but the next three teams would each fail to meet their diminishing expectations.
The Highlights
Here's the audio of the Hawkeye radio play by play of the 46 seconds of that game on YouTube.
Here's the ESPN highlights.
Apparently Iowa had the nation's worst rushing attack in '04-'05. That's actually quite an accomplishment.
Check out the downfield blocking on the magnificent Broussard run. The Reggie Bush-like cut and spring was fancy. The wide receiver making a picture-perfect crackback block was gritty.
What the hell was LSU doing on the final play? It looks as if two defensive backs were sent on a blitz on the weak side...and then they stopped and waited for something, leaving open the wide receivers running go routes.
Check out this semi not intriguing interview with Tate before the game, discussing how he hated O'Keefe his relationship with the coaches and the LSU defense.

I'm curious
what 5 games betyween the two conferences were better than this one. Those MNC games sure weren’t…

Agreed, the MNC games starring tOSU's epic failure don't even compare.
I mean… what more do you want? Back-and-forth game not decided until the final play, blue-collar benchwarmer gets legend-ized with his first career TD catch, widely regarded as one of the best bowl games of the last decade, period, let alone SEC vs. Big Televen games, etc. etc.

Other observations:
It was Nick Saban’s last game as LSU coach.
A reserve defensive back named Ronnie Prude apparently blew the coverage that allowed the final score to happen. Legend has it that after the game, Saban was berating Prude and dressing him down in front of the entire team in typical high-volume, high-spittle fashion. Prude’s reply supposedly was, “You are not my coach. You coach the Miami Dolphins.”
Though Jamarcus Russell played a great game, this was not his coming out party. I remember in 2005, after LSU beat Tennessee on a last-second touchdown, some stupid commentator said, “This is the first time Jamarcus Russell has ever gotten a signature 4th quarter win.” This was dead wrong. In Jamarcus Russell’s career, when LSU had the ball with less than 2 minutes to play and down by a touchdown or less and JR in the game, LSU was something like 8-2. He led us to a comeback win in his VERY FIRST CAREER APPEARANCE against Oregon State in the first game of that season.
The craziest thing about that 8-2 statistic? This game was one of the 2 we lost!

keep those saban stories coming…he’s about as loyal as Fredo Corleone

To adapt one of his own phrases...
He is what he is. With a guy like Saban, you take the good with the bad. He’s an outstanding program organizer and a great coach, but he’s as ambitious as a Clinton with fewer scruples. There’s an old fable about a fox that convinces a farmer to let him guard the chickens by telling him that he’s a nice fox, but then eats the chickens. When confronted, he explains, “I’m a fox. I eat chickens.” Well, that’s pretty much how I feel about Saban. He can do wonders for your program, like he did for LSU, but you better be watching your back and you better have a plan for cleaning up his messes.

The running game
Yeah, that was the year that Iowa had its top 5 running backs go down with season-ending injuries before the end of September. Our starting back was a walk-on named Sam Brownlee. So we just chucked it all over the field and kept winning. After that year, we honestly thought Ferentz & Co. could send out the Westside Elementary School Pop Warner team and win 9 games.

i cant remember that many injuries hitting one position at anytime, ever
i mean, people get hurt, but god was that excessive…I think oregon went through something similar last year at QB with season ending injuries

Correction
Dolph’s quote was, “The game’s gonna end on this play, and Drew Tate doesn’t know that!”
I only remember because I watch these highlight videos on a monthly, sometimes weekly basis. I have all of the great Dr. Gary Thorne quotes memorized… Remember these:
“…and Iowa holds ’em and wins! Iowa, with a great goal line defense, wins it 20 to 13, in the second overtime.”
“Holloway… touchdown! OH MY! …and the fans are on the field! The clock has expired!

Nevermind
I misremembered the quote too.

I was at that game.
On the last play, I remember (as a neutral fan) pointing out to the LSU fan sitting next to me, “Unless Tate totally f**** this pass up Iowa’s going to win.” He hadn’t noticed the (lack of) coverage either.

Oh yeah...
…I hope the ’95 Citrus Bowl makes an appearance on the list. What a comeback.
