We don't cover college baseball much at The Rivalry, Esq. because...well, we're the Big Ten. We don't really DO college baseball. But if ever there was a time to glance at the quaint sport, this was the weekend.

Sure, you remember The Ohio State University getting pounded by Southern schools in back to back BCS Championship games. You likely also remember The Ohio State University getting soundly beaten by a Southern school while playing for the Men's Basketball Championship. Those losses were embarrassing and put a stain upon the school and the conference. But nothing, and I mean nothing, equates with what The Ohio State University did this weekend.

Playing in a regional championship (against a Southern school), The Ohio State University, the Big Ten regular season champion, managed to plate six runs. Sadly for the boys in scarlet and gray, the Seminoles of Florida State managed to plate more. 31 more.

OHIO STATE LOST A BASEBALL GAME 37-6.

I don't care if they were playing Manny Ramirez's Steroid All-Stars, you don't lose by 31. At some point, you start taking people down. Congratulations, Buckeyes! You've found a new way to be laughed at in the South.

The fact that you admit your ignorance before taking the tone you do is a little shocking.

Anyways, maybe others would like to be informed of the circumstances surrounding the game. OSU had just finished beating Georgia (Oh, look..an SEC team!) before they were shuffled over to play FSU ten minutes later in the first elimination game. OSU had two relievers who barely pitched in conference play as the only two guys left in the tank. Predictably, the kids struggled. They then had to scrap together any arms they had, including walk ons, to just finish the game.

Really surprised that a self-professed Big Ten blog wouldn’t even research the circumstances surrounding the game before posting this.

I am even more shocked to see the condescending tone coming from someone who attended and roots for a university that is mediocre at best in almost every facet of the sports world.

Iowa couldn’t even make regionals in baseball. Iowa football is a big bowl of average. And Iowa basketball is a joke.

Really disappointed in this post. I can understand the shock at the score, even a little humor. But the “oh, look…OSU can’t beat Southern teams” cliche and angle is old. And wrong. But I suppose I wouldn’t expect anything better from someone with an Iowa education either.

While context is always welcome...

Let’s try to keep comments focused on substance. Portions of this comment border on attacking the personal characteristics of the author.

That simply, isn’t cool.

Thanks for bringing the whole story to light.

Wow

A rational, intellegent post…that is driven right into the ground. 95% of the country, if they see this story at all, will simply see it as posted, that OSU got blown out. You are right to correct the misconception that they were simply overwhelmed, but it speaks volumes that you need to immediately turn it into an attack on another school.

7 innings

I hadn’t heard that.

As for Gahnki’s thoughts…maybe you’re unaware, but if you find yourself in the loser’s bracket, you’re going to be forced to play twice on Sunday. And yes, tOSU did beat Georgia Sunday morning to qualify for the game with the Seminoles. But, maybe if tOSU would have pitched better in the opening game of the regional (when they had a staff of fresh arms…when they went out and lost 24-8 to Georgia), they would have found themselves in a better position on Sunday afternoon. I count six teams who managed to not only play well on Sunday’s second game, but also to win. It’s not an impossible task – no matter how much tOSU might have made it look that way.

As for Iowa, you’re right. They just can’t win at anything.

Horseshoes and Handgrenades

The first comment on this post encapsulated my feelings on the Buckeyes most recent defeat perfectly…until the last paragraph.

Attacking a school’s athletic mediocrity is absolutely fair game . Attacking academics? That has no place here.

All Big Ten schools are academically rigorous at their best (and will all have some duds at their worst).

As for Bama’s “wrestling champs” retort, not really sure that’s the comeback you want it to be. OSU, after all, took home the prestigious women’s synchronized swimming and pistol swimming titles this year, and coed fencing laurels in 2008. (Love, Wikipedia.)

Moral for all of you? At least you’re not Cleveland sports fans.
