Last Call Drinks Pinot, Talks Sporting News College Football '09
So I just enjoyed a drink and a smoke at the fabulous Chateau Marmont, in West Hollywood. When in the City of Angels TRE recommends rolling up your sleeves, cutting into an El Rey Del Mundo, and slipping into a chaise lounge chair in the garden after dusk. As Harry Cohn, founder of Columbia Pictures once said, "If you must get in trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont."
Every year I look forward to the day the CFB preview magagines hit the stands. (I imagine you do also). The other night, I stopped at a drugstore on Vermont Avenue to pick up a copy of Sporting News College Football '09, the self-proclaimed "No. 1 Source," for pre-season previews. Sure, it's a bummer having to buy the So Cal region cover -- blown out with a picture of (USC Safety) Taylor Mays and the caption "A-MAYS-ING," but I took my copy over to a back booth in a neighborhood bar, and scanned it cover-to-cover.

It's not the region I bought, but you get the idea.
As I flipped through the extra glossy pages I was surprised at the number of simple errors spread across the previews. This might be the Journal editor in me coming out, but the guide really has an unacceptable number of typographical slips.
According to Sporting News, Ohio State's three losses in 2008, "were on the heels of the humbling defeat at the hands of Florida in [sic] '07 BCS title game" (p. 50).
While, technically that's true -- I think they meant to say, "at the hands of LSU in the 08' BCS title game." (It worries me just a bit when the person writing a preview doesn't remember more than thirteen games back).
Someone also messed up on the graphics in the "Order Your Favorite Cover Now!" advertisement on page 96. Amongst the Northeast, Deep South, and Plains regions are two covers captioned "Region Name," as in, "Insert region name here." Whoops.
Best season...ever? (p. 8). Anyway, on to the substance. Sporting News is right to fan the flames a bit coming into 2009. After all:
- "Over the next several months, we could witness the greatest player in the history of college football, one of the all-time dynasties in the game's history and only the second two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy. All from one team."
- "[Q]uarterback Sam Bradford, like Tebow, could become just the second player to win a second Heisman."
- "[A]nd Ole Miss -- yep, Ole Miss -- is a legitimate national title contender."
Where's Iowa? Only two Big Ten teams are listed in the preseason Top 25 (No. 9 Ohio State, No. 12 Penn State). By comparsion, 5 SEC, 5 Big 12, 4 Pac 10, and 4 ACC teams made the cut. The only BCS conference that has grounds to feel worse is the Big East, who didn't put a single team on the list.
Rankings that won't survive September:
- "No. 6" Virginia Tech (Who faces Alabama, Nebraska, and Miami (FL) before the leaves turn). The good news? They won't see East Carolina until November.
- "No. 14" Boise State (Chris Petersen's luck will run out in the first week of the season when Oregon visits Boise on Thursday night).
Big Ten Superlatives. In its "Rating the Players," section Sporting News rates the conference's best. Here's their list, side by side with my own:

More effulgence when Last Call returns to the barstool...

Hey buddy
Chris Petersen is the head coach of Boise St., not Gary Patterson. He coaches TCU.

How is Ohio Stadium
best home field advantage? Last time I checked, they lost at home last year, something Penn State didn’t do.

My vote was based on more than a season's worth of data.
Since 2004, Ohio State is 30-4 at home, an 86.7 percent winning percentage.
During that same period, Penn State is 29-5, an 82.8 percent winning percentage.
All time, Ohio State is 374-104-20 at home, a 72.2 percent winning percentage. (I can’t find a comparable stat for the Nittany Lions).
Interestingly, NittanyWhiteOut.com — the site you reference in your signature — just rated the Horseshoe the Toughest Venue in the Conference.
It’s a close call, but I’m sticking with the ‘Shoe. Apparently, I’m not the only one.

They've also been a better team
You’ve got to account for the overall record. PSU lost 11 games over that time, for OSU, it’s 8.
So Penn State was better at home than on the road by a better margin that OSU, who had the same record give or take some garbage wins.

Please
Take.
The.
Blinders.
OFF.
Not everything must, or should, be PSU uber-alles. Every once in a while, some other team is better at an aspect of football.
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

Best under pressure?
I like Daryll Clark, but what has he done under pressure?

watch the USC game
the fact that he had even 5 completed passes that game is a miracle.

Best Fans = Penn State?
Shameful…I think that’s a “lose your Ohio Stadium season tickets”-worthy error.
Top 5 fan bases in the Big Ten, in order:
1. Ohio State
2. Michigan
3. Penn State
4. Wisconsin
5. Iowa
Criteria include historical team success, blog presence, home field atmosphere, tailgating prowess, and overall fanaticism. On those counts, I think you’re hard pressed to make the case that Penn State boasts the best fans in the Big Ten.
I invite your dissent and rationale for ranking the Lion faithful ahead of your native Buckeyes…too much Southern California sun? Fear of geriatrics? Love for steel country?
The Sporting News’ mistake I get…yours is a little harder for me to explain.

Michigan is 2nd?
That stadium is dead-quiet during games. I’d move UM fans down to 5th, due to sheer silence during football season, and move the rest up a notch. Otherwise, that’s fair.

If we're judging fans by sheer homer loyalty...
Ohio State wins
Remember that family guy when the guy is trying to explain something to the Donkey and the Donkey just starts braying and won’t listen to anything he says? That’s how I feel about Ohio State fans…If you don’t agree that TOSU is the greatest thing, greater in fact than sliced bread, your wrong. Nope your wrong. Wrong WRONG!
Oh, sorry Law Buck…Whats that? We started a blog together? Hmm…

To be honest
I’m taking PSU at 1, and Wisconsin at 2. Those guys are simply crazy.

(Buckeye, L. Dissenting)
Different criteria lead to different results.
I don’t agree that "historical team success," should be a hard factor in the "best" fans equation. After all, Cleveland Browns fans are some of the more unabashedly loyal apologists I’ve ever met, and their program isn’t exactly a vanguard.
When I talk "best" fans, I look for a healthy combination of fanaticism, sportsmanship, and level headedness. Take Nebraska for example. You can’t get much more essentialist than Cornhusker fans. But every Saturday, win or lose, the home crown in Lincoln applauds for both teams as they depart the stadium after a game. That’s classy.
I love my Buckeyes, but the scarlet loses points here for decorum. Last season I stood uncomfortably in the Horseshoe as the crown booed a lame-duck Todd Boeckman, when he entered a mop up game late in the third-quarter and threw an incomplete pass.
The problem, I suspect is one of expectations. Rightfully or wrongfully, fans in Columbus share a false sense of entitlement — primed by lofty Top 5 rankings, and perennial BCS appearances. For too many, it’s no longer good enough to beat Michigan, or win the Big Ten — it’s win a National Championship, or bust.
Not surprisingly, unrealistic expectations lead to crushing disappointments, and negative backlash. Last season, in the wake of an embarassing USC defeat, someone forwarded me a "Fire Tressel," petition. That person, should lose their season tickets.
For me, the best fans aren’t just the biggest and the loudest, they’re the most patient — the most comfortable in their own skin.
Ohio State isn’t alone in the arrogance column. Most marquis programs suffer in the same ways (Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, USC). Call it a casualty of greatness.
Anyway, in this lone category, I simply can’t say we’re the "best."
Thanks for your post.

I agree with most of this
Iowa probably is a top 25 team. I don’t think Ohio State or Penn State should be in the top 10, but they’ll ride easy schedules to BCS games.
Darryl Clark best under pressure? For shame, He was never pressured last year except at Iowa and against USC, and looked like hell in both. My vote is for Stanzi.

If 21 of 36
for 273 yards and 2 TDs is “looking like hell,” I’ll take it.
