Armchair Quarterbacking With The Rivalry, Esq - Iowa v. Penn State
Matchup - 9-0 Penn State @ 5-4 Iowa
Date - November 9, 2008
Game Score and Time - PSU 23, Iowa 21, 0:42 mark of the 4rd quarter
Capsule - Ricky Stanzi was having a Tom Bradyesque 2nd half, with 127 yards passing and two touchdown drives against the Big 10's best defense, but the Nittany Lions held a slim lead in the closing minute. Thanks to the now infamous pass interference penalty on 3rd and 15 and some clutch throws by Stanzi, the Hawkeyes were only a field goal away from pulling a huge upset.
Down - 3rd and 6, ball rests at the Penn State 25.
Play Call - Iowa's play calling, always conservative under Ferentz, lends itself to these situations, one would think, but the options here are numerous. Dive middle for no gain to set up a 41 yard field goal by Daniel Murray on a windy day...Run off tackle with Greene (like they did all year so successfully) for a possible first down or to avoid any chance for turnovers...Roll out Stanzi to give him the throwaway option or a safe, short pass...But I mean, God Almighty, don't throw the ball down the field or take a sack while sitting on the Upset of the Year, you can't take risks...Plus the Penn State defense has spent the entire drive in the Iowa backfield hurrying Stanzi. Some helpful stats to consider:
Stanzi's stats so far: 14-24, 165 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 3 Sacks
Greene's stats: 28 carries, 117 yards
Iowa's 3rd down conversion at home % in 2008? 7th in the conference.
Penn State's road passing defense in 2008? 1st in the conference.
Murray's stats up to this point in 2008? 1 for 3, with a long of 44 against Maine. No attempts since a miss v Pitt.

OC Ken O’Keefe calls for a rollout left pass, resulting in Stanzi throwing unnaturally across his body and across the field to a wide open Derrell Johnson-Koulianos for a first down. My favorite part is when the announcer says (I am paraphrasing) “what a brilliant call, I mean here they call a roll out left, which is not natural for Stanzi and…” and then the announcer sort of stops his train of thought because he realizes how maybe rolling out that way wasn’t so brilliant after all. Well, it worked out, but I still feel like off tackle or position placement is better here. Murray had a good leg, I know the wind was bad, but why risk a TO?

Thank you for at least
addressing the controversiality of the officiating in that game. While there’s no use crying over spilt milk, it was an incredibly frustrating pass interference call that I will never accept should have been called. But if you want an armchair QB moment, how about Penn State’s insistence on running gadget plays late with the lead, resulting in an holding penalty and interception inside of FG range?
1st and 10 from the Iowa 24…where do 2 consecutive Derrick Williams sweeps rank? I’d put it as awful playcalling.

It was no more controversial
Than Iowa’s rughing the kicker call that kept a PSU drive alive resulting in their second and final TD.
I’ve never really understood how anyone could consider that PI call controversial. Sure, you can go for the ball but you can’t jump on top of the head of the WR before you do it. That isn’t controversial.

except for the fact
that Scirotto was up first. The WR undercut him, and as Scirotto reached for the ball, he came over his body. In basketball, he’s over the top, but in football, he was going for the ball.
And by no means was that roughing the kicker. Agree 100%. But it also pisses me off that in a game where they’ve been “letting them go at it” all day, they finally call a holding call on that last drive. You can’t tell me that was any worse than a dozen holdings on both sides that weren’t called.

He didn't undercut anything
The WR has the right to go for the ball, and neither guy has the right to tackle the other guy before they get the ball – I don’t care if you are going for the ball or not. The announcers had it right. You CAN go for the ball. You CAN’T jump on the other guy’s head to get it.
Wow. And for the record I think that was a very legit call for roughing the kicker. However, if you don’t then how can you complain? One bad call for one side resulting in a TD for another bad call on the other side resulting in a FG. I’d say PSU got the good side of that deal.

Good to get yardage
“Murray had a good leg.” – That hadn’t had a meaningful kick since September. And it missed that one. It’s not like a 41 yard kick is ever a gimmie for a college kicker, but especially in that pressure situation.
The best part about this call was the context of the past two seasons. Jake Christensen, the 4 Star recruit who was Iowa’s 2007 QB and lost his job to Stanzi, was a lefty. All Ken O’Keefe called in 2007 were rollout right pases. This resulted in a ridiculous amount of lame ducks thrown across Jake’s body. Obviously, KOK redesigned the playbook for his lefty QB in 2008 - only to have a righty back under center by this point. Well, the play says roll left, so we’ll keep rolling left. I expect that KOK has had the eight months necessary for him to flip the plays back in their original direction again.

Hawkeye State told me about that…I was incredulous about it until I realized that oh my god it might be true…
Really weird weird play calling…I always get confused when I watch that game for the 143rd time on BTN…
