80 Reasons to Love the Big Ten - Nos. 31 - 30
No. 31 - Cream of the Crop
Amidst the high noon sky and sweltering humidity, Penn State football fans beat the heat with a local treat: Berkey Creamery Ice Cream. Each year some 4.5 million pounds of milk pass through the Creamery's stainless steel holding tanks. About half comes from a 225-cow herd at the University's Dairy Production Research Center. As one source reports:
Getting ice cream at the Creamery during the weekend football games has been a PSU tradition since 1896. And this isn’t the standard Cold Stone or Ben & Jerry’s, this ice cream is so fresh that on average, only four days pass from milking the cow to getting your delicious cone. This is one cold treat you must get your hands on.
Forbes named the Creamery one of the nations' best in 2009.
No. 30 - Year Round Dominance
The Big Ten isn't just a football club. The league has also been more than productive in basketball, with five programs winning at least one NCAA national title. They are:
Indiana (5), Michigan (1), Michigan State (2), Ohio State (1), Wisconsin (1)
That ties the Pac 10, and tops the SEC's 3, and the Big 12's 2 court champions.

Babcock deserves to be mentioned, too
UW’s dairy is WONDERFUL. Same deal with the cows-milked-on-campus. Had a friend whose job it was for a semester to get up at 4 and go help milk them. The campus cows provide all the milk for the dorms on top of the killer ice cream, including flavors such as Berry Alverez (FB coach/AD) and Bo’s Express (bball coach). Mmmmm…

Speaking of Wisconsin tradition
When I visited Madison during the winter, everyone was in tents on the ice, sleeping and I assume fishing…Is this a yearly thing or did I just catch an odd winter happening?

It's called ice fishing
And there are residents of this state crazy enough to engage in it any given day all winter long. Those tents are for wind protection and (austensibly) warmth, although I think a healthy helping of bourbon, whiskey, or (the state favorite) brandy, helps far more than most of those tents.

Erm...

When I first read that, I was thinking that didn’t seem right, and then I realized you were counting schools, not titles). Though by that count, you’ve also got the ACC’s 4 beat. And math on the Big East is tricky; if you’re counting OK State’s titles to give the Big 12 two (despite them not being a member of the Big 8 at the time), then the Big East has seven (Cinci, UConn, Georgetwon, Louisville, Marquette, Syracuse, Villanova), but Cinci, Louisville, and Marquette were not in the Big East when they won their titles.
